"Boy" By Roald Dahl

Roald Dahl was born in 1916 in Wales of Norwegian parents. He was educated in England and later worked for the Shell Oil Company in Africa. While he was there, World War II broke out and Dahl joined Britain's Royal Air Force as a pilot. He was shot down, and while he was recovering in a hospital, he began writing.

Roald Dahl's first children's book , The Gremlins, was published in 1943. He first achieved fame in 1961 with the title "James And The Giant Peach". From then until his death in 1990 he wrote many successful titles including "The BFG" which won The Children's Book Award and he Whitbread Award in 1983. His style of writing is very easy to read, and his books have achieved enormous popularity around the world.

Roald Dahl died in 1990, 74 years old.

"Boy" is a memoir of Roald Dahl's fascinating childhood where we can take part in his memories and experiences, from he is a small boy in kindergarten till he gets his first job at the Shell Company.

"Boy" consists of 25 chapters. I liked them all, and here is a resume of the most dramatic one; A Drive in the Motor-Car.

When Roald Dahl's first term at St. Peter Boarding School ended in December 1925, he had an enormous homesickness. Therefore, it was a great delight when Roald's mother came to bring him and his trunk home for Christmas holidays; a couple of weeks without hard study, sadistic headmasters, monster-matrons and grotesque canes.

The weather was exceptionally mild that Christmas holiday, and one amazing morning, the Dahl family was going to take their first drive in the first motor they had ever owned. The car was a black-painted French automobile, called De Dion-Bouton. The driver was Roald's elder sister who had received two driving lessons from the man who had delivered the car.
