The sophisticated, and classic masterpiece, "Citizen Kane", is probably the world's most highly-rated, and famous film with its many amazing scenes and performances, cinematic and narrative techniques in photography, editing, and sound. Its director, star, and producer were all the same brilliant individual, Orson Welles. "Citizen Kane" is known to be the best movie ever made, but how does it compare to movies of our time? How does the editing, sound, framing and lighting in "Citizen Kane" hold up to the movies: Saving Private Ryan, Silence of the Lambs, and Brave Heart? But I do believe that "Citizen Kane" is the best movie of all time.

"Citizen Kane", the film, is many things. It is a brilliantly crafted series of flashbacks and remembrances. It is a remarkable statement for the wide range of time periods that it covers. There is not a major director today who has not been influenced by the genius Orson Welles put forth in his debut masterpiece. The lighting used in this movie is remarkable, they use shadows like no other movie I have ever seen. "Citizen Kane" was a revolutionary movie in terms of editing, camera angles, and story. It was also ahead of its time. When this movie came out, there was no other movie like it. "Citizen Kane" is a film

that one can call great without feeling stupid about it. It is nothing less than the Bible for filmmaking. There is no doubt that in 1941 Orson Welles created a masterpiece that would be copied by many but equaled by none.

"Citizen Kane" added more to the vocabulary of filmmaking than any other director had done before or has done since. The unusual narrative patterns, shock cuts, deep focus, eccentric camera angles, the exaggerated soundtrack foreshadowed the techniques that would come into widespread use over the years. It is doubtful that any good director has not been influenced somewhat by "Citizen Kane."
