"People In Positions Of Power Are Most Effective When They Exercise Caution And Restraint In The Use Of That Power"

It is widely believed that people who hold positions of power should use their power prudently and with a degree of control and thoughtfulness and hence be more effective in their posts or duties. These people can be politicians heads of business organizations, educational and military institutions, sports bodies, etc. However, it can be argued that if these people use their power with restraint, then people will tend to take advantage of this cautious approach and subordinates will be ill-disciplined .I believe that only if power is used judiciously it will have the appropriate effect and overuse of power will do more harm than good.

The overpowering reason for my belief is that when people in power exercise restraint, they can win over the support and approval of their subordinates as well as the general public. The common masses will have more respect for them. For example, India's politicians and leaders showed common sense and restraint by not reacting rashly to neighbouring Pakistan's acts of terrorism on Indian soil. The Indian leaders did not use excessive force or go overboard in their response to this intentional attack by Pakistan and hence won over the support of many neutral countries. This greatly strengthened India's position internationally.

Another reason for my belief that power should be used with caution is that people who use their to its maximum extent become too arrogant and pompous. They begin to think that they are superior to everybody else and become too attached to power. It is said that power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely. Consider the example of Adolph Hitler, who became so obsessed with power that he wouldn't stop until he had the whole world under his power, committing many atrocities in the process.
