1984 Book Review

It is the year 1984 and Winston Smith is a citizen of the super-state of Oceania. He is from Airstrip One, which was formerly the country of Great Britain. Winston is a member of the Party which is the ruling political faction of Oceania. The party runs the everyday lives of the citizens of Oceania. The Party consists of the Inner Party members, who are considered the most elite of the Party members, and regular Party members who are the normal everyday citizens of Oceania. The leader of the Party is a man called Big Brother. His image is portrayed throughout Oceania in huge images of his likeness with slogans like “Big Brother is Watching You.”   The Party has three simple slogans that all of its members live by: “War is Peace,” “Freedom is Slavery,” and “Ignorance is Strength.” There are people who are outside of the Party who are called proles. They are considered the simplest of people and live in poverty, but they are free from adhering to party rules and regulations.
Winston was first placed in the Party system when he was placed in a Party orphanage after he lost his parents and younger sister during the Revolutionary Period. This period destroyed the way of life that the citizens of Great Britain used to know and instituted Ingsoc in Oceania. Now as an adult Winston has a job in the Records Department of the Ministry of Truth. The Ministry of Truth is the section of the Party that handles all Party publications and propaganda. The Records Department of the Ministry of Truth is to alter previously published Party propaganda and publications in order to ensure that the Party is never questioned on its take of happenings in the past. They often alter predictions in order to make flawed Party predictions accurate, or even remove a person from history altogether.   The other ministries within the Party are the Ministry of Peace, which handles Oceania never ending wars, the Ministry of Love, which handles political prisoners taken by the Party, and the Ministry...
