1984:Methods Of Control
In Nineteen Eighty-four and Brave New World, the controlling states effectively manipulate the population's thoughts, through various controlling factors unique to each novel. In both novels, history is distorted or altered completely, and the emotions and thoughts of the populations are controlled by a successful combination of thoughts and ideas. The states in both Brave New World and Nineteen Eight-four are led by high-powered minority groups which oversee the rest of the population, although with differences in austerity. The state in Nineteen Eighty-four is controlled by fear, the threat of the Thought Police, constant observation and the brainwashing of the young throughout the education system. Brave New World teaches its policies through hypnopaedia, social predestination, and a state-distributed drug called soma, all which keeps the population content with their lives.
In Nineteen Eight-four, the population of Oceania is divided into two groups the Party members, which themselves are divided into upper and lower Party members, and the proletarians, which are a much lower class, and divided from the Party members. The proles in Nineteen Eight-four are similar in idea to the savages in Brave New World, in that they are left alone to live without the control the rest of the population live under, without rules imposed on them. They can be controlled, but for the most part both the proles and savages are left to live uninterrupted by the lives of the rest of the population, as they do not pose a threat to the government.
In Brave New World, the population is pre-conditioned as embryos to define their class. There are five such classes, or castes, which the children will become Alphas, Betas, Gammas, Deltas and Epsilons. This is similar to the citizens of Nineteen Eight-four, who are also divided into class, mostly defined by their parents' position.
