Introduction:

This essay talks about the 19th century English home interior. In the 19th century there were 3 main styles which effected the home interiors: regency period, early Victorian and late Victorian. The 19th century interior was affected a lot by the industrial revolution as products became cheaper to buy.

From 1811 to 1860 a strong middle class was arising, and with it comes a stronger sense of importance. The home became a symbol of Victorian stability, and the family men had to have as large and expensive house as possible.

The rising middle class displayed part of Regency and early Victorian style. Also the industrial revolution was growing which gave jobs to many people. Every thing started to be mass-produced so the prices fell, and this made the people buy more and more things for their houses.

In the interior of Regency homes there was a feeling of lightness in the atmosphere and colours. Windows generally were large and draped with light coloured silk, linen or chintz curtains often stripped. They were held back from the window to allow maximum light from out side to come in the room.

Colour:

The introduction of aniline dyes late in this period resulted in more strident colour schemes in the home, seen mainly in upholstery coverings, curtains, carpets and wallpapers. These dyes slowly replaced the earlier softer tones of vegetable dyes. Particular favourites were Prussian blue and chrome yellow.

Wallpaper:

Wallpaper and upholstery were matched to the scheme. Papier-mâché was used a lot for cornice and frieze mouldings because it was less expensive than carvings. As the Victorian period grew through time more and more furniture was included in a room.
