A Christmas Carol

Stories and novels often involve the key characters learning a lesson. What does the key character in ‘A Christmas Carol' by Charles Dickens learn?

I am going to write about how the main character, Ebenezer Scrooge, from the novel ‘A Christmas Carol' by Charles Dickens changes his ways. I will be discussing how he chances as he learns from the visions shown to him by three ghosts that visit him on Christmas Eve.

A Christmas Carol is about Ebenezer Scrooge, an old man who hates children, people, the world and most of all Christmas. Ebenezer Scrooge is visited by three ghosts, four including Marley's ghost. The first ghost that visited Ebenezer Scrooge was the ghost of Christmas past, the second, the ghost of Christmas present, and the third and last of the spirits, the ghost of yet to come. After these visits Ebenezer Scrooge decided to change his ways for good.

To begin with I will discuss how Ebenezer Scrooge is presented before his meetings with the ghosts. Ebenezer Scrooge is a miserable, unkind man, who is uncaring and inconsiderate; Scrooge owns a counting office, a cold dismal place with two small fires and one of which his clerk Bob Cratchit was so small ‘that it looked like one coal.' Even to his own blood, his own nephew, Scrooge had shown no happiness or joy.

Scrooge is visited by his dead business partner, Jacob Marley, who worked with him at Scrooge and Marley's counting office, Marley had died seven years previously. Marley warned Scrooge about what would happen to him if he did not change his ways. Marley explained to Scrooge that he will be visited by three ghosts; the first ghost was due to arrive the following night ‘when the bell tolls one, the second, on the next night at the same hour. The third, upon the last night when the last stroke of twelve has ceased to vibrate.'View Full Essay
