The story "A clean, well-lighted place", written by Ernest Hemingway, is about an old man and two waiters. The old man, who was approximately eighty years old, liked to sit at the table on terrace one of the cafes. He was deaf. The old man visited the café every night. He liked quiet places: "In the day time the street was dusty, but at night the dew settled the dust and the old man liked to sit late because he was deaf and now at night it was quiet and he felt the difference." Two waiters, who worked at café, knew that the old man liked to drink some alcohol. Also, they knew that he was a very good client because he was rich man: "He has plenty of many." He was along among visitors of the café. When the old man called one of the waiters in order to get some drink the waiter began to indicate to the old man: "You'll be drunk." But, the old man said nothing to him. The waiter brought a bottle of brandy. Then, he poured one saucer full of brandy and said to the old man: "You should have killed yourself last week." Since the old man was deaf, he asked the waiter to get one more saucer of brandy. After that, the waiter took the bottle of brandy back inside the café and started talking to his colleague about the old man. They knew that the old man tried to commit a suicide, but two waiters did not know particularly why he did it. The old man's niece rescued him. The old man was neat. He never spilled any drop even if he were a drunk. When the old man asked one of the waiters to pour again one saucer of brandy, the waiter said to him: "Finished. No more tonight. Close now." Then the old man did not hesitate. He paid for the drinks and went away: "The old man stood up, slowly counted the saucers, took a leather coin purse from his pocket and paid for the drinks, leaving half a peseta tip."
