A Hero?
It's difficult to decide if somebody is a hero or not. This is a word, that doesn't have the exact definition. People are different. They have their own values, point of view at the world. If sometimes we can't even decide what is good and what is bad, how can we say if someone is a hero or not? Of course everybody can say that Superman and Spiderman are heroes; it's obvious. These characters were made to fit "The international standard" of a hero: he is young and strong, saves the lives of thousands of people, and, of course, sometimes he easily saves the entire world by fighting the EVIL. Undoubtedly he is a hero!
But what if somebody real appears, who doesn't have any superpowers? Somebody who just lives his life and makes it funny and enjoyable, who doesn't save anybody? Who just makes his loved ones to smile?. Not a hero? My opinion about this "somebody", Sommersby, is that he is definitely a Hero, with a capital "H. Why do I love and respect this character so much? Because I have a lot of reasons to do so.
First, I understand him. And that's why it's clear for me that he is a hero. And I'm capable to explain everything bad and good he did.
Above all, Jack was a person of values. He always paid attention to his wife, and respected all the neighbors around him. It's so interesting that everybody in that town believed him and started to respect Sommersby almost as soon as he got back from the war.
Moreover, Sommersby's relationship with his wife is a very important topic to talk about. I can't even explain how beautiful it was to see how they both loved each other. "Jack before the war" was totally different. The moment when Lauren tells Horace that she had never been so happy, when they were in their bedroom, gives "New Jack" the title of a hero already just for making a woman feel this way, making her feel like she is a queen of the Universe. It takes a real man to do it.
