A Mexican Mission
In the summer of 2001, I went on a mission trip to Mexico. When you think of Mexico you think about tequila and tourism, but I saw the poorest places of that country. Our youth group went to two cities, which were La Esperanza and Tijuana. In La Esperanza we went to a workers camp and in Tijuana we stayed in a hospital. On this trip, I learned to share, help the less fortunate, and give people happiness when they don't have any.
I lived in Florida at this time and I went to a church in Ft. Lauderdale called Good News Fellowship Church. In January of 2001, my youth pastor informed us of a mission trip they wanted to go on in Mexico. He asked all of us who wanted to go on this mission trip and to sign up for it. The cost of trip was 895 dollars and then the pastor said that we were going to do fund raisers and activities to raise the money for each of us. We knew we had a lot of time to do all these activities.
Our youth group had many fund raisers and activities planned to raise the money. We also had to pay a deposit in the beginning to start our accounts. Our first activity was a donations only potluck. We had a Mexican theme because we were going to Mexico. The tables were decorated with green, red, and white. We had all sorts of food like enchiladas, tacos, rice and beans, and quesadillas. Everything was so good and people gave us good donations, but I also got to know the other people that were going on the trip better. Our next activity was a car wash. You would think that a car wash would get a lot of money, but the days we did them on were always cloudy and very bad days. We also did various activities to get to know each other. I was new to the youth group, so I didn't know anyone that well. My youth pastor did an activity that involved a rope and we had to tangle ourselves and untangle ourselves. It was confusing but it was fun and our group got closer.
