A Raisin In The Sun- The First Year
One Week after Moving Day
The Younger Family finally has a new home, a real home, where they only have to share a bathroom between them, and not the whole floor; A place where Travis doesn't have to sleep on the couch, and a place where the new baby can grow up playing in his yard. The only problem in this new house is the new neighbors. For seven days, none of them have acted very neighborly.
"Well, when neighbors move in, don't they usually give a cake to em or something?" Mama commented.
"Sure they do Mama, but not in this neighborhood, not when we the only colored people around here." Beneatha remarked.
"Well you're pretty fine yourself I the kitchen, why don't you make something and bring it on around to a neighbor or two."
"Ha! Mama, I'm sure you know that won't work. These people prob'ly think we fittin to poison them!" Ruth interjected.
"Ya'll just stop your noise! Give these people a chance, they gotta get used to us like we gotta get used to them." Walter said stepping inside their living room area from the bedroom. The house wasn't well furnished, all the furniture from the apartment was there and they couldn't afford anything else with Walter missing out on all that money.
"Yes I like that positive attitude Walter Lee." Mama glanced around the room, looking for someone, "Why, where is my granbaby Travis? It's goin on near nine thirty, where is he?"
Ruth chuckled, "He must still be asleep! That boy done gone and caught up on all the rest his little body ever needed these past few days."
"That boy startin to come off lazy, you betta send him to the store make him run some errands for you." Beneatha said, trying to save herself the long trip.
"Beneatha, don't you talk about my son being lazy! That boy has slept on a couch all his life," Walter said, his voice easing before continuing, "He sure must be happy, in his own room with his own bed."
