A1-Outline Catholic Teaching On Wealth And Poverty
Christians consider money and wealth to be a mutual thing, as it is not conscious and does not have control as to how it is spent. They believe that it is love of money that is dangerous, not money itself. This is because some people become too attached to money and wealth and so money and wealth becomes there god.
Money can be used for good ( such as buying food of clothes for the poor), but if in the wrong hands it can also be used for evil ( such as buying weapons or illegal drugs) making it neither good nor bad.
There are many stories and biblical teachings in the bible showing that having the wrong attitude o money and wealth can lead people away from god. A good example of this would be the parable of the rich farmer told by Jesus.
In the parable of the rich fool (Luke 12:13-21) a wealthy farmer who had a fine harvest decided to build a bigger barn in which to store his extra grain. After doing so he thought to himself, ‘I have many good things laid up for many years. I should take life easy; eat, drink, and be happy. That night, the farmer died having no chance to enjoy his wealth.
On Many occasions Jesus taught people that they should not pursue wealth in this life, but that they should try making themselves rich in spiritual things- ‘ Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth… But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven’ (Matthew 6:19-20).
However, the Catholic Church has always taught Christians that they have a duty to make money to provide for themselves and there family. Although Catholics believe providing for themselves and family is ok they believe Christians should only gain money in lawful and moral ways. The Catholic Church believes Christians should not be involved in any business that exploits people, such as the sex industry and when working for an employer they should work fairly and with honesty.
