Abortion, Whose Body Is It Anyway

ABORTION: WHOSE BODY IS IT ANYWAY?

Abortion is an issue that has caused a revolution in modern society. Abortion is the removal of an embryo or fetus from the uterus in order to end a pregnancy. What has been so controversial about this issue is whether the mother has the right to terminate her pregnancy or not. Public opinion has been divided among those who believe abortion ends a human life and should be punishable by law, they call themselves pro-life movement, and those who believe the woman has the right to choose whether to have an abortion or not and that abortion should remain legal and available to all women, these people call themselves pro-choice. The decision to terminate an unwanted pregnancy can be one of the most challenging decisions of a woman's life. In some cases it is in the best interest of the mother to terminate her pregnancy because of various factors such as medical complications, fetal abnormalities, tragic events like rape, or lack of money. I believe women have the right to terminate a pregnancy. The decision of a woman to have an abortion is between her conscience and her God, no one else's. Because after all, whose body is carrying the fetus? Since the woman is carrying the fetus or embryo she has the right to decide what is best for her and her body, she has the right to choose.
Abortion has been performed for thousands of years, and in every society that has been studied. It was legal in the United States from the time the earliest settlers arrived on our shores until the mid-to late 1800's, when some states began passing laws that made it illegal. During this time in history, all surgical procedures, including abortion, were extremely risky. Hospitals were not common, antiseptics were unknown, and the most recognized doctors had only unsophisticated medical education.
