One word has the power to cause turmoil emotions in every person on the face of the earth. This one word has made people question their morality, and the compassion of God. One word has to an extent made society contemplate the meaning of being human. Abortion. Abortion has existed since the start of time. There have been "medicine men/women" who prescribed "magical" herbs to expecting women that would make them miscarry. Early abortion regulations were done to protect women from untrained abortionist. (Druyanl, Sagan) During the 1800's there were an undetermined number of deaths caused by complications of such abortions. By the 19th century abortions were criminalized. A landmark for abortion was the1973 Supreme Court decision of Roe vs. Wade. This case involved a Texan resident who wished to terminate her pregnancy by aborting. The law in Texas prohibited abortions with the only exception to save a pregnant woman's life. The Supreme Court heard the arguments twice, and on January 22, 1973, "The Court held that a woman's right to an abortion fell within the right to privacy (recognized in Griswold v. Connecticut) protected by the Fourteenth Amendment. The decision gave a woman total autonomy over the pregnancy during the first trimester and defined different levels of state interest for the second and third trimesters."
