Abortion: Is it Morally Right?
Abortion is the termination of pregnancy and expulsion of an embryo or of a fetus that is
incapable of survival. It is also a very controversial topic that has many different viewpoints.
Although abortion is more acceptable in society than it was twenty years ago, it is not often
talked about except during debates. There are some who support abortion fully in every aspect
believing a woman should have full control over her body and her decisions. Others believe
abortion is understandable in some situations, such as rape or women in desperate situations.
Then there are people who are completely against abortion and consider it murder. There is no
chance for compromise on this issue, as all sides are firm on their beliefs.
Abortion was not always legal. It wasn't until it was discovered many desperate women
would perform their own abortions, often killing themselves in the process, that something had to
be done. Currently in Canada, abortions are free and legal. Women are given reproductive
freedom; the fundamental right of every individual to decide freely and responsibly when and
whether to have a child. Abortion can also be useful in the issue of stem-cell research. Aborted
embryos that would normally be disposed of can be used for their human stem cells which can
bring new treatments and possible cures for many debilitating diseases and injuries, including
Parkinson's disease, diabetes, heart disease, multiple sclerosis, burns and spinal cord injuries.
The main argument for pro-abortion is that it is a basic right for a woman to decide what happens
to her body.
