About A Boy
When I had finished reading the first two chapter of About a boy there were a lot of questions hanging in the mid-air: Is it possible for a boy like Marcus to turn out to be an ordinary twelve-year-old boy? And what about Will? Will he change his behaviour and grow up? To answer these questions I have to take into consideration the two guy's experiences so far in life. For instance; what have they been influenced by during their childhood? Is it possible for me to dig back in time and find out?
When I read the first pages of About a boy, I soon realized that both Marcus and Will are cut off from normal relationships. And I wonder if it is possible to bring them back in normal relationships again?
On the other hand there is also another questions to be asked:" Are the two guys in a position to develop themselves so much that they can get to their" right age?" And at last; if they are able to do so will they manage?
Marcus is a weird twelve-year-old boy, looking after his suicidal depressive mother. He often thinks like an adult which isn't very typical for a boy of his age. I think he has reached adulthood too early.
Marcus and his mother, Fiona, have recently moved from Cambridge to London so he hasn't got a lot of friends. In fact Marcus feels and looks totally out of place in his new school, and therefore he doesn't get along with his classmates. He is the boy most likely to be bullied in school, and he surly does. He is different than the others .He doesn't wear the right clothes; he wears what his mother buys him. She is old fashioned and hasn't got the clue how to dress a twelve years old boy or how to combine clothes. Marcus has a strange hair cut too, he feels responsible for his mother's depression, and worst of all he sings loudly in the classroom without even noticing it himself.
Fiona, who is a bit hippy-like music therapist, tells Marcus what to wear, which music he should listen to and what to eat....
