might the legalization or decriminalization
of drugs be beneficial to
society?
I think that only if there were very strict guidelines such as marijuana being used to treat deadly diseases that it should be allowed. By legalizing drugs there is no benefit unless it can help save a persons life and even then the side effects associated with its use need to be taken into consideration. If drugs are legalized they should not be available easily, a doctor must prescribe them and maybe even have a second opinion, the drug user must be monitored for addiction, and the drugs only taken as prescribed. If a person fails to abide by the guidelines then they should have a note placed on their medical records that they are no longer allowed to use the substance and must find alternative ways to help their illness. Other than that I do not believe that their are any circumstances where legalization or decriminalization of drugs would be beneficial, with the exception of population control but that is inhumane.

Yes, I do consider alcohol a drug. I believe any substance that leads to addiction is a disease and therefore a drug. Because of the side effects alcohol has on people such as impaired decision making I think it should be more difficult to come by. People will always get it somehow even if it were illegal so I think that they should not be denied but rather strict guidelines and laws should be put into effect. I think D.U.I. checkpoints are beneficial but they do not stop a lot of people from drinking and driving. There are organizations such as M.A.D.D. (Mothers Against Drunk Driving) to educate people but an alcoholic most likely will not bring themselves to the class unless made to do so from the law, I have...
