Adult Development
I am a thirty year old, mother, Account Manager, and college student. In this paper I will be discussing the progression of my life thus far, and where I see myself going in the future; I will also discuss Adult Development theories that tie into my life experiences and challenges, and hopefully provide you with an entertaining and informative synopsis of my perspective on my life as a whole: past, present, and future.
I was born in 1977 in Fort Leonard Wood, MO to a Filipino mother and an Irish-Italian father. They met on base in Florida, and were married for four years. They divorced shortly after I was born, and my mom moved to my grandparent’s house in TX. We traveled quite often to the Philippines, but I stayed in Texas until 2005. Texas in the late 70s and early 80s was an interesting place growing up as someone that was not clearly “white”, “Mexican”, or “black”. The old Jim Crow laws seemed to be fully in effect, and neighborhoods and schools were still segregated, although it was primarily by the choice of the citizens who chose to live with their own kind. I grew up as a quasi outsider, and my mother and I dealt with a lot of discrimination. I dealt with this by burying my nose in books, and my best friends were often the characters in fiction. I was a great student, and had every intention of following the normal path of high school graduation and then college, and then work.
My plans of a standard life were derailed a bit when my mom married my former step-father. Our relationship was turbulent, and my teenage years were quite a bit more difficult than what is the norm. I was an honor student, enrolled in all AP classes, lettered in Debate, ran track and cross-country, and modeled in my spare time, but all of these things went in the trash because of my home life.
