With the advent of many new inventions, America became to expand and industrialize. During the time of 1860 to 1900, there was a drastic change in the daily lives of most Americans. Between 1790 and 1860, the Patent and Trademark office of the federal government, issued just 36,000 patents, or licenses to make, use or sell an invention. In contrast, between 1860 and 1890, 500,000 patents were issued for inventions such as the typewriter, sewing machine, and phonograph.
This industrialization period, was simply promoted by the rapid production of inventions and ideas, which people came to see brought a more entirety of ease and understanding to there normal hard-working days. With the advent of this new technology, railroads began to use some of this new technology to improve transportation. Improvements in train and track design, plus the construction of new rail lines, gave railroads a "big boost". Railways then took a next step, by building what was called the "transcontinental railroad". This railway extended from coast to coast, making transportation and communication much simpler. Time was also a giant factor for the railroads traveling cross-country. In turn, this caused the development of "time zones", which established permanent times in each part of the United States. Time zones as a new idea made it easier not only for passengers, but also for businesses and there shipping times.
The railroads were not the only idea that promoted this industrialization. Advances in communication arose, which made many fears of isolation diminish. The telegraph made it possible for messages to be sent over wires. This in turn made it easier for businesses and people to communicate, therefore promoting the idea that industrialization was beneficial.
