The Struggle of Dimmesdale

Nathaniel Hawthorne's The Scarlet Letter is one of the most famous novels known. Its setting is during Puritan times, focusing on two main characters, Hester Prynne and Arthur Dimmesdale. The story of Hester and Dimmesdale focuses on their struggle of their lives caused by Puritanism. The struggle of Dimmesdale starts after Dimmesdale and Hester committed adultery. The conflict in the story developed when Dimmesdale's agony and struggle was caused by the fact that he was too much a part of Puritanism. Having sinned against the church and not confessing made him feel very guilty. The very strong beliefs in Puritanism caused his agony. His agony was also caused because he has failed his Puritan beliefs, and the fact that it has failed him. Dimmesdale's suffering and agony was caused from his beliefs and actions.
