Throughout history politics in Afghanistan and Central Asia have followed this quote. In the past 200 years numerous rulers, governments, and ideologies have come through these areas and have changed the face of politics forever. In today's society when political stability is a necessity these areas are more unstable now than ever in history. Thus allowing the corruption of politics, people, and their ways of life.
Political continuity has been present in Central Asia since the 1800's, but it slowly deteriorated in the late 1900's. Central Asia emerged from wars between Britain and Russia in 1839-1893. The major goal of these wars was for one of the countries to gain control of Afghanistan, but while fighting for Afghanistan each country gained their respective territories, thus creating the Central Asia that we see today. Eventually each country accepted the notion that Afghanistan could not be won and decided to rule their newly acquired territories. Every since Alexander I Central Asia was ruled by a strong handed central government. At first it was the Tsar's ruled Russia and all its lands then the U.S.S.R, and now democracy. The Tsar's rule was so successful in Russia that the empire just kept on expanding. "During Alexander's sixteen years on the throne of Russia, Wilson calculated, he had added 200,000 square miles to his empire…."(Hopkirk 61). The Tsar's knew in order to maintain the empire they needed an enormous army. That's why the Tsar quadrupled the size of the army in the early 1800's. Although in every empire the tides of power eventually switch and thus the U.S.S.R formed. Once the U.S.S.R came into place another strong, military political system took place.
