Introduction

Many countries in this world go through years of oppression and war. Afghanistan is a country that was rich with agriculture and history yet has been considered to be one of the poorest countries for the past century. The current status has dramatically changed the Middle Eastern region for decades to come due to the collapse of government and disarray of economic gain. Afghanistan has been in turmoil since the war with the USSR (Union of Soviet Socialist Republics). Although Afghanistan emerged victorious after 14 years of war, the government was in shambles and the tribes native to the land were in many disagreements.
Purpose
This research paper will investigate the current status of Afghanistan and how it has changed in regards to its economical, governmental, and societal status. Although Afghanistan has been war torn for decades, there have been some major changes in the country in attempts to stabilize the region. An example would be by the International Development Association (2007), which cites that, “The economic analysis of a sample of National Solidarity Program (NSP) subprojects showed economic rates of return (ERR) between 26.3 to 60.8 percent.”
Research Question and Thesis
When the USSR left Afghanistan, the capital was taken over by a band of tribes called the Taliban. The Taliban were known to support terrorism and have been accused of harboring the noted leader of Al Queda, Osama Bin Laden. Since the occupation of the U.N. (United Nations) and mainly the U.S. (United States), the Taliban have left the capital of Kabul. A new government and U.N. aid have been invested to reorganize the capital and country of Afghanistan.
