What is a classic? A film that is able to stand the test of time. A film that is able to work well many years after its release, and prove that it can stand up against advancements in special effects, changing fashions and audience tastes. I am certain that Director Ridley Scott’s 1979 chiller Alien belongs in that list. Ridley Scott’s direction on this film is simply phenomenal. By using a combination of artistic film techniques, he deserves the title of master.
In deep space, a couple of hundred years ahead, the crew of the commercial ship “Nostromo” is awakened, halfway through their journey home to investigate a distress call from an uninhabited planet. They discover that the SOS is actually a warning call, rather than a call for help. However, it is too late to turn back as three members of the crew have already left to trace the beacon. They come across what appears to be a derelict ship. They encounter an awesome horror, which begins to kill the crewmembers one by one.
Narrative is not just the way you tell a story but it is also how you organize the material in order for the movie to come together. Narration is said to be the way the filmmaker captures our attention, interest and emotions by controlling what story information we are given. The amount of information given throughout the story helps us to imagine that we are actually there. Scott used this to tell the story because it helps to create an atmosphere of suspense, finding out who the real heroes and villains are. Typically, a narrative begins with one situation; a series of changes occurs according to a pattern of cause and effect, finally, a new situation arises that brings about the end of the narrative.
We can see how Scott used narrative effectively in Alien because of how the film begins and ends. The film starts with the title on screen and the word “Alien” is formed, and the design is supposed to represent some form of alien language, which gives us an impression of what...
