In Frank Marshall's 1992 film Alive A plane takes off carrying members of a rugby team and their supporters. On the way to Chile, it slams into a snow-capped mountain leaving the thirty two survivors of the crash to fend for themselves. When thrown into a tragic situation such as this it is inevitable that faith will pour forth from each individual.
Among the survivors we meet Nando, a determined and strong willed young man. When faced with this disastrous episode Nando assumes the role of leader. After the food has run out, he suggests they eat the dead whose bodies have been preserved in the snow. The others agree, comparing it to communion, where those who have passed on provide their friends the means to survive. I believe that his thinking was that he must protect those whom had survived so far and must partake in any means deemed necessary in order to stay alive.
Equally compelling is the film's portrait of the heroism of the two men who risked their lives in a grueling......
