A fun take on that is getting the family together to bake an apple pie. There is something for everyone to do and the result: a yummy apple pie. Here is my grandmother's apple pie recipe. Get the family together and start baking.
It is best to start by measuring out all of your ingredients so that you have them handy. This way you don't have to stop to get your next ingredient. You will need: six small or four large cooking apples, Granny Smith are recommended; 1 ¾ cups all-purpose flour; ½ cup cold margarine or cold butter; at least ½ cup sugar, or sugar substitute, this depends on how sweet the apples are; ¾ teaspoon ground cinnamon; a pinch of salt; cold water; and one egg. Also needed are: a pie pan, a standard 9-inch pan is recommended; a small fruit knife; a peeling tool; a rolling pin; a pastry brush; and a small cooking pan. Once you have these ingredients together, you are ready to begin.
First, you must prepare the apples. Wash and peel the apples, then core and chop the using a small fruit knife. Place the apple slices into the small cooking pan. Sprinkle 2 ounces of sugar, two tablespoons of water and ¾ teaspoon of cinnamon over the apple slices, this is a good for the kids to do. Cook the apples slowly until they are soft. Place them in a suitable container and refrigerate them for later use.
The next step is to prepare the piecrust. Combine 1 ¾ cups of all-purpose flour and ½ cup of margarine or butter. Add a pinch of salt and 1 ounces of sugar. Using your hands rub the ingredients together until the mixture resembles bread crumb, the children will enjoy helping with this.
