Who Am I?
We all, at one point in our lives, have asked ourselves the question, “Who Am I?” The answer is often answered quickly, or searched for extensively. The first step to the answer is finding our self-concept, which is very important because it defines “how you think and feel about yourself” (Hybels and Weaver 29). Self concept opens a lot of doors to our true identities in the sense that it is how we feel about ourselves; if we have a positive self concept than we are naturally moral, confident, and proud of the things we accomplish. Those are things that I have always strived for. Often, if our self-concept is negative, it leads us to have a negative perception, or the way we look at others and the world around us, toward others (Hybels and Weaver 29).
I am a happily married military wife and a mother of one. My two year old son has given my life a meaning that I never imagined. I suddenly want to be someone not only I, but my family is proud of. I can honestly say that I struggled with my self-concept for a very long time. I would best describe myself as flawed yet very determined and persistent. Throughout my life, it is safe to say every trying or difficult time has only pushed me to improve myself and work harder for my achievements. As an adolescent, I was always that person who knew what the right thing was, and did the opposite. My actions led me to have very guilty feelings, and I concentrated too much on my shortcomings. The fear of being different took over my thoughts, which also affected my perception of others. If anyone seemed different from the “norm,” I might not admire or respect them as much. It took me a long time to learn not to judge others, but to accept their differences.
