An Unlikely Angel
Whether or not we like to admit it, a first impression has in someway either helped, clouded, or impeded our ability to understand a person or thing for what they really are. Gleaning true information after a bad first impression sometimes becomes the most difficult thing. In A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings' Garcia Marquez magically portrays the way in which appearances can deceive you from believing the truth.
The man, who is presumably an angel can only be referred to as "a very old man with enormous wings" by the townspeople, for "his pitiful condition of a drenched great-grandfather had taken away any sense of grandeur he might have had" (233). Based on their knowledge of angels, and his dreadful appearance they are naïve and find it highly impossible he could be anything more than a "ragpicker". Instead of possessing angelic wings he had those that resembled a "huge buzzards" (233), and did not use "the language of god" (234).
