The Apartheid
The apartheid was introduced in 1948 by the nationalist controlled government as its official policy for the future development of South Africa. Its purpose was to maintain their control in South Africa. “The white man must always remain boss” It arose from national grievance and economic depression, where the whites were fearful of the competition of jobs from Africans and more. To protect themselves they denied the Africans equal opportunities and freedom. The Africans had no representation in parliament there fore any voice in the way the policy was developed. Surprised? Everything was separated, even the different races were divided in to their own areas, not even husbands and wives of different race were forced apart from each other. Africans were forbidden to enter the ‘white areas’ unless they had a pass. To ensure total control the Bantu Education was introduced which meant the blacks not only attended separate schools but were taught poor quality courses compared to the whites higher standard of education, restricting them of ever becoming anything more of what they were. These are just some of the examples of the harshness and the reality the apartheid brought upon the Africans.
Under the apartheid Africans had no say in the government of South Africa. Only whites could vote for election. This meant that the Africans could not voice their opposition.
The Apartheid soon developed into a policy known as ‘separate development’ Their strategy was to ‘divide and rule’ to prevent the Africans from uniting and challenging white power.
