Sound is scientifically defined as a vibration that travels through the air or another medium and heard when it reaches a person’s or animals’ ear. Or if you want to define it in technical terms, the vibrations that travel through the air at around 1,087 feet (331 meters) per second at sea level and then heard through the organs in the ear. The energy made by vibrations is what makes up sound. An example would be plucking a string to cause that string to vibrate and in turn cause a movement to the air particles. Like a domino effect, the moving air particles bumps into more air particles causing a sound wave until the energy is all used up. Different type of sounds can be produced depending on how the energy is moved and produced. You could pound on a table or clap your hands to cause vibrations and movements in the air particles. The vibration is then transmitted to our ears by a medium which is usually air. From those vibrations in the air particles, our eardrums start to vibrate as well, and impulses, which are signals, are transmitted to our brain. Vibration is a main characteristic in producing sounds. Only when they reach our ears that these pressure pulses turn into sounds.
Music is created when a certain vibration or movement that is converted into sound is played or caused at a certain time. Unlike other sounds, music is distinguished by four main properties of musical sounds: pitch, dynamics, tone color, and duration. Dynamics is the determination of how loud or soft the sound is which the duration of the sound is the length of time a musical sound lasts. Singing is also a familiar way of making music as well as musical instruments. Musical instruments can be seen as any mechanism other than the voice that produces musical sounds.
