At a glance: The Catcher in the Rye
Jerome David Salinger was born in 1919 in Manhattan, New York, to a Jewish man and a Scotch-Irish woman. They lived in an affluent apartment on Park Avenue. There he grew up and attended many prep schools and later studied at Valley Forge Military Academy. He was later drafted into the military and fought in World War II. He endured several bloody battles such as the Invasion of Normandy in which he experienced the vast horrors and tragedies of war. Salinger began to write short stories often about soldiers in the war. After serving in several capacities of the military, he devoted most of his time to writing. He then continued his creation of short stories in which he had many published. Salinger also wrote a number of novels but few made any impact. J.D. Salinger is most well known for his novel, The Catcher in the Rye.
