Attachment To Self Causes The Fundamental Spiritual Dilemma That Entraps Us.

Our desires and lusts, dictate what we do, and how we do it. Kenneth Lay had a desire for money. His desire was so strong that he did anything to get it, things like lying, cheating and stealing to get more. In the end his company was revealed as a sham, his employees lives are greatly diminished, and he is broke and facing prison. This is the vicious cycle, although usually on a less grandiose scale, of desire.
According to Sri Swami Sivananda, "Without a measure of detachment, life becomes vitiated with an all- pervasive selfishness. It is gross selfishness that is at the root of individual discord, family disharmony, communal disruption and international tension." He notes that detachment does not mean careless neglect, but rather a forfeit of our selfish desires as we go about our lives (SIVANANDA, 1998).
