Ballad Of Birmingham

Ballad Of Birmingham

Journal #2

“The Ballad of Birmingham” by Dudley Randall was a wonderful poem to say the least. It tells a story of what this mother fears more than thing for her child is to go out into the streets of Birmingham and get hurt in the march for freedom. Well no sooner after they were talking about it, her worst fear came true as soon as she heard the explosion. Much like the lyrics in this song I have printed out. It is called, “Where Were You When the World Stopped Turning”. I am sure you are familiar with this songs in remembrance of the 9/11 attack. When that event took place, the whole world, in a sense, stopped completely. So did the mothers world when she heard that explosion and just knew her baby was hurt. The poem and the song both have a feeling of a dramatic concept. In my eyes, both of these have an exact rime. Even though they may not look like it, but they sound like it. And also end rime, coming at the end of each line. Neither of them have a euphonic effect or a cacophonic effect to them. They are kind of in the middle. Neither pleasing of the mind or too harsh of words. Those are the things that I see similar in these two works. The poem is very touching and I will never forget it. A poem has never struck me so endearing as this one did. That poem and that song are two in the same for me. The both just give me the same feeling when I read each of them.
