Barn Burning by William Faulkner and Two Germans by Bernt Engelmann are two outstanding pieces of writing. These two stories each entail descriptive details about two men who are prime candidates for comparison. The relationships, demeanor, integrity, and conscious of these two men will be compared to one another. The outcome might be interesting. We might find out that these two men are very separate individuals and the only connection they might have is the “evil” actions both have committed. However, one is more evil than the other, deep down in his soul.
In Faulkner’s work, an immoral character Abner Snopes is center of attention. This is a man, displays neither sympathy nor emotion what so ever. His calm cool attitude and cold-hearted acts personify him in a way most people would characterize a murder or similar criminal. The repeated burning of barns based on revenge is a cruel and cowardly act. An act in which requires full thought, planning and the maturity of a confused juvenile. Faulkner’s character Abner Snopes repeats these inhumane acts out of rage and lack of moral principles.

Plagued with the poverty shared by many in his time, Abner Snopes has to deal with the continuous fight for survival. In his search for a better way of life, he finds himself working for a wealthy plantation owner, Major de Spain. Unable to comprehend why a Negro house servant is on some elevated pedestal in relation to his own stature is one of the many dysfunctional abilities Abner Snopes is guilty of.
