The notion of universal truth is no longer relevant immediately as such complicated and sad phenomena as war is concerned. This is especially true for liberation movements and wars against colonial rule, which have been numerous during the last century. During the war no party is universally right or universally wrong, but they are trying to prove themselves, each other and the world exactly the opposite. The parties at war do it by means of propaganda, which is transmitted by means of mass media and also by means of art. That's why speaking of a piece of art the theme of which is related to war it is often difficult to distinguish whether it is biased for any of the sides or not.
Algerian war that took place between 1954 and 1962 and ended with liberation of Algeria from French rule is on the list of one of the bloodiest liberation wars of the century. It causes additional interest of historians, as Algeria is the only country conducting a successful guerilla war against the foreign conqueror (Gerber & Rienner, 1988, p. 105). The topic of Algerian war remains relevant until present times, as new facts about it are revealed and new confessions are made.
The events in Algiers that happened during the war were at the time commonly known as the battle of Algiers. The same is the name of perhaps the most unbiased accounts of the war – the film of Italian directors Gillo Pontecorvo and Franco Solinas that was released in 1966. It isn't hard to distinguish, that the Battle of Algiers is in no case propagandistic, because it doesn't advocate either of the sides.
