The Cold War was the name given to the relationship that developed between the U.S. and the Soviet Union after World War II. The Cold War began because of the U.S. determination to get rid of communism. One the other hand the Soviet Union wanted to spread it (Trueman). The main concern that escalated the problem was the Cuban Missile Crisis (Congress Library). This all began over Nikita Khrushchev (Prime Minister of the party of the Soviet Union) receiving permission from Fidel Castro (Prime Minster of Cuba) to have the Soviet Union build missiles in Cuba. President John Kennedy received word of this and asks for them to be brought down. Khrushchev sent two letters the first saying they would if the U.S. would stop evading Cuba and another one saying they would if the U.S. brings down their missiles built in Turkey. The U.S. only responded to the first letter. Even though we did Cuba and Khrushchev were confident that the U.S. wouldn ’ t evade Cuba anymore (Congress Library). It should be noted that no one actually fought through the Cold War but it brought us to the brink of a nuclear war (Sierra). Richard M. Nixon proposed it Dwight D. Eisenhower planned it Robert F. Kennedy approved it The CIA carried it out 1,197 invaders were captured 200 of them had been soldiers in Batista's army (14 of those were wanted for murder in Cuba) One CIA soldier fired the first shot A volunteer teacher was the first Cuban casualty 4 American pilots and over 100 Cuban invaders were killed in battle 1,400 Cuban invaders felt betrayed by their sponsor One U.S. senator lied to the United Nations.
