Behind The Scenes: The Truth About Being A Waiter
The full moon is out, not a cloud in the sky. You're nervous and almost at a point in which your starting to perspire. The gorgeous girl your with gets sat down and starts revising the menu. This date has to be perfect. The waiter arrives and takes your order. As he comes by a couple more times you rarely pay attention to him and just continue your conversation. As your food arrives you begin to eat. You pay the bill and walk out ecstatic that your date loved the food and the date went great. That's the point of view of a typical teen as he paid no attention to his waiter. To him the waiter just took his order and took the check. Must be great to have people pay you money just to take an order and make sure they pay. Typical misconceptions of an average person, no idea of what goes on behind the scenes at an expensive restaurant in suburbia. There's a constant struggle between the waiter, his manager, customers and even his co-workers. You must balance more things than a normal person can handle. The life of a waiter is not for everyone and it's not at all what it seems. The easy part is taking the order and getting the bill.
I had an opportunity to spend a day with Glen, a great young waiter of Tarantella. It's a pleasant Italian restaurant filled with vibrant colors and the tantalizing smells of Italian food in a suburb outside of Ft. Lauderdale. His day started early, around 8 in the morning. He went to the gym and then drove back to his cozy 2 bedroom townhouse. He said the gym keeps his mind clear for the stresses of work. As he got ready for work he explained to me how he usually got to work 15 minutes in order to, "keep the manager off his ass." He then made a very suspicious stop at a friend's house to get "something he needed so he could work." I made nothing of if but instead continued questioning about his experiences as a waiter at Tarantella. We got to Tarantella at around 10:45 in the morning.
