Best Friends
“Wake up you’re going to be late!” This was the voice of my mother; I often heard these
words Monday through Friday during the school week, school days were very routine, not just
for me but for my best friend Caitlin too. After I was dressed and had eaten my bowl of cereal it
was off to Caitlin’s house. Caitlin only lived right down the street, and we would frequently
catch rides with each other, our mothers would alternate driving days. The two of us would
spend all day together, during lunch and recess and even do our homework together after school,
we were inseparable. It wasn’t until the fourth grade that unknowingly things would change.
“We got a new girl in class today, her name is Amber” Caitlin said, volunteering
information that I was not really interested in. “That’s cool, let’s go climb your tree” I said trying
to drop the other conversation, and begin something a little more intriguing. We played for the
rest of the evening until it was time to go home, and Amber was not brought up again that night.
The next morning things were going as usual; we went to school and went to our classes. Recess
came late that afternoon as it always did, but it was not quite the same; as I ran quickly over hot
asphalt I was excited to meet Caitlin at the playground, only it was not just Caitlin awaiting me.
“Who’s she?” I muttered, “This is Amber, she’s going to play with us today” she said excitedly, I
was not nearly as excited as she was, Caitlin was my best friend, and I wanted it to stay that way.
As the days went on Amber was more predominant in our daily activates, and even began
coming around after school. The two seemed to become very close as I was becoming a thing of
that past. I saw this happening and I was pea green with envy. “How could this be happening?”
Caitlin was my best friend, “Who was Amber and why was she so great?” I began to hate her.I
