The Drosphila melanogaster has become one of the most widely used species of animal in the scientific world, particular in the field of genetics. The animal that is commonly known as the fruit fly is a two winged insect that can have either red eyes (wildtype) or they can have white eyes (mutant type). The red eyes fruit flies usually are yellow-brown in color and they are also noticed to have black rings that cover the abdomen. Their wings are also about 3mm long and they have a unique characteristic that is seen, the females and the males they differ in length. The females have a longer body, which measure at about 2.5 millimeters long, while the males have a body with a length smaller than that of the females. You can also notice the male from the female not only by the body length, but also because the male fruit fly has a darker backside than the female. Another characteristic that is not shared by the female is the one distinct patch across the abdomen of the male instead of the dark black rings that are on the female. One reason that we have seen the emergence of the fruit fly for scientific purposes is mainly because of their life cycle, which is usually about 30 days if you can put them in an environment that is about 29 degrees Celsius. Another reason that the scientists like to use the fruit fly is because they can produce eggs and the eggs can go through their life cycle in a short amount of time. The female fruit fly usually lays a total of 400 eggs during her life span, which are usually laid in fives. The female will lay the eggs on some rotting fruit or other decaying material, and they will get their nutrients from microorganisms that are on these decaying fruits and also on the sugar from the fruit so that they can grow into the adults. During this time the eggs would grow into larvae, that will eventually form and encapsulate themselves in a structure called the puparium and after four days will turn into an adult fruit fly.
