Braveheart history or Hollywood? The movie Braveheart was one of the biggest blockbuster hits in history, portraying Scottish hero William Wallace.
The most significant difference in the movie and reality is not in the overall story of the movie, but in the small details of the movie.
It is true that the sheriff of Lanark killed his sweetheart "The Heiress of Lamington." Wallace trapped the sheriff in his apartment and killed him in retaliation for her murder however this did not initially start his rebellion. He had been fighting the English for several years before the sheriff killed his sweetheart. It is also true that English solders killed his father while he was them, however Wallace was not a boy he was about sixteen at the time.
The first big battle of the movie was the battle of Sterling Bridge. The main problem was that there was no bridge, instead it was shown as a big open field. This was not how the battle was fought. The battle was fought at Sterling Bridge. There was a bridge! This was essential to the Scottish History. In reality the Scottish waited on the other side of the river from the English. The English figuring the Scottish would fight in the traditional manner and wait for all their soldiers to cross the bridge, but William Wallace only waited for about half the English to cross the bridge before he attacked them. The Scottish slaughtered the English on their side of the bridge sending the remaining English solders fleeing from the battlefield. It is estimated that five thousand English solders were killed in the battle. In reality many of the English solders escaped, unlike in the movie where all the English solders were killed. The movie was factual in many ways on the its portrayal of the battle. It was clearly a Scottish victory . William Wallace did insult the English Commander before the battle began and the English Commander was killed during the battle.
