A Comparison between Hinduism and Buddhism
Our world has numerous religions that each individual dedicates him or herself to. Out of these many religions, Hinduism and Buddhism are recognized as two of the most popular religions that are widely practiced. For more than two thousand years, Hinduism and Buddhism have been in a close relationship since the times of Ancient India. Both religions have many similar practices and ideas, as well as many differences between the both of them. Some of these similarities and differences will be talked about throughout the following paragraphs.
Hinduism and Buddhism practice the belief of achieving a state of peace. In the religion of Hinduism, achieving a state of peace is called moksha (“Buddhism and Hinduism”). In the religion of Buddhism, the state of achieving peace is known as nirvana (“Buddhism and Hinduism”). In the Indo-Aryan language of Sanskrit, nirvana means “blowing out” (“Buddhism and Hinduism”). Each time a person dies, their soul is recycled and they go through the cycle of rebirth. When a person achieves nirvana or moksha, the mind is free of anything afflicting against the state of peace, such as anger, jealousy, and conflict. Both, Hinduism and Buddhism, each have their own paths to achieve a state of peace. After this state of peace is achieved, the individual no longer goes through the cycle of rebirth.
Another similar practice between the two religions is showing nonviolence and compassion to living things. This nonviolence is known as ahisma, which means an avoidance of sacrificial injury (V). According to one of the virtues of ahisma, one must react nonviolently if offended by violent actions or thoughts, and should not cause injury to living things, such as plants or animals (V).
