In modern society , cancer is the most feared disease by the majority of the people, all through the world. It has an equivalency to tuberculosis in the 1800's, the bubonic plague of the Middle Ages and leprosy of the biblical times. Cancer has been described throughout history , but it has such a huge prevalence today due to all the diseases that have been figured out or cured by medical science and yet it can't be cured.
Cancer is the common term for a larger class of diseases known as neoplasms. A neoplasm is any new and abnormal growth, specifically a new growth of tissue in which the growth of tissue is progressive and uncontrolled. Neoplasms can be classified into 2 groups, either benign or malignant. A benign tumor Is not cancer because the cells can be removed and in most cases do not come back. Cells in benign tumors do not
spread to other parts of the body. Most important, benign tumors are rarely a threat to life. On the other hand malignant tumors are cancer. Cells in malignant tumors are abnormal and divide without control or order. These cancer cells can invade and destroy the tissue around them. Cancer cells can also break away from a malignant tumor and enter the bloodstream.
There are many cancer causing agents. All cancer causing agents are called carcinogens. There are many different types of carcinogens. Carcinogens can be chemical , biological , or physical. Chemicals that cause cancer include complex hydrocarbons; aromatic amines and certain metals, drugs, hormones, and naturally occurring chemicals in molds and plants.
