Although A Good Man is Hard to Find is written in third person; it is clear that this story belongs strictly to the grandmother.   Following each action or characteristic she obtains; the end of the story is expected amongst all readers.   Karma takes place, and even if grandma did not deserve punishment of that extremity; the reader knew exactly what to expect when the she immediately recognized and pointed out the Misfit.
In the opening paragraph, the first two sentences show that Grandmother is selfish and will do whatever it may take for her to get what she wanted.   “She wanted to visit some of her connections in east Tennessee and she was seizing at every chance to change Bailey’s mind.”   In this story, selfishness seems to run in the family; Grandmother’s selfishness shows to have rubbed off on her son, Bailey.   Being extremely rude and inconsiderate of anyone but himself, Bailey shows he is definitely his mother’s son.
Of course, his children John Wesley and June Star are not the perfect “dream child” every parent wishes to have, either.   Rude, catty comments from June Star prove that she has never been taught etiquette from neither of her parents or Grandmother; while John Wesley shows his colors as a little rough housing boy, going right along with the old saying, “boys will be boys.”   While most traditional families teach their children right from wrong with spankings or other types of punishments; things in this dysfunctional family are certainly not going to fix themselves like Bailey and his wife seem to hope for.
Of course, John Wesley and June Star’s bad behavior cannot be blamed solely on Grandmother; their mother and Bailey could have certainly punished them the way most parents would punish a disobeying child.   Sadly, though, the mother pays no attention to her children.   Even if she would have, she would have been too kind to have done anything about it, as the description suggests, “whose face was as broad and...
