Characterization Of The Grandfasther In "The Return"
Characterization is the representation of a character by describing actions, gestures, or speeches. Strong characterization results in convincing and realistic characters to which the reader can accept as a real person. Alistair Macleod did an exemplary job in characterizing the grandfather in the short story "The Return". Macleod used three methods to give the grandfather a lifelike personality. The methods used to reveal the grandfathers personality traits are through his mannerisms, dialogue, and how other characters in the story respond to his actions.
To begin, Macleod used the grandfather's mannerisms to portray his personality. The first of the three actions that were indicative of the grandfather's personality was his addiction to chewing tobacco. The addiction showed that he is devoted to his way of life and he is not planning to change or leave it like his son had. In some ways it also shows that he is stubborn because he did not want to stop the unhealthy habit like his son had. The next incident that reveals a personality trait is when he is returning back home after a day at the mines. "Every once in a while my grandfather stops and turns to look back at the way we have come" (page 110). This constant looking back implies that the grandfather is reflective and grateful. The grandfather is very diligent and he put a lot of time into this mine. It provides him with a living and helps him to raise a family with eight children. He can reflect and appreciate the mine for the support it has given him and his family despite the physical harm it will cause him. The final action that indicates a part of the grandfather's personality is when he lifts up his grandson but does not kiss him. "He too lifts me up but does not kiss me" (page 102).
