How Charlie Kaufmann and Michel Gondry differentiate between the real and Joel's memories in Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind by breaking down the conventions of Classic Hollywood narrative.

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless mind (ESoTSM) is an unconventional romance told in the abstract, inventive and comedic storytelling style of screenwriter Charlie Kaufmann. The plot works on a relatively complex idea of a systematic and selective process of memory erasure. After a tumultuous relationship Clementine (Kate Winslet) decides to have her memories of Joel (Jim Carrey) erased from her memory.

Out of disbelief and desperation caused by receiving this information, Joel contacts Dr. Howard Meirzwrak (Tom Wilkinson) in order to reciprocate the procedure. However, during the practice, via disjointed sound and action of recalled memories, foggy periods indicating Joel's confusion and flashbacks to his childhood, Joel comes to the realisation that "it is better to have loved and lost than to have never loved at all". The film is then concluded in a beautiful metaphor for the end of a relationship, giving it excellent closure.

Defining ESoTSM to a single genre would be impossible as it crosses all boundaries of conventional categorization. It is as much a romantic comedy as it is an unbeautiful Indie film, a self-conscious aesthetic arts film or a dark satire on the intrusiveness and repercussions of technological advances. Based on this tenet this essay will concentrate on the Narrative aspects of the film. ESoTSM undisputedly breaks many of the codes: verisimilitude, transparency, transitivity and continuity, usually associated with the Classic Hollywood Narrative (CHN).
