Chem
Purpose:
The purpose of this lab is to see and learn how the process of titration works.
Safety:
· Always wear safety goggles and a lab apron to protect your eyes and clothing.
· Don't touch any chemicals.
· Call your teacher in the event of a spill. Tell her how it happened and if anyone got hurt.
· Never put broken glass into a regular waste container and don't throw away used matches into the trashcan. Throw them into the coffee can provided at some labs.
Materials:
· 0.500 M HCL
· (2) 50mL burets
· (3) 100mL beakers
· 125mL Erlenmeyer Flask
· Double Buret Clamp
· NaOH solution of unknown molarity
· Phenolphthalein Indicator
· Ring stand
· Wash Bottle
Procedure:
1. Set up the apparatus by using the ring stand and the Double Buret Clamp. Attach the two 50mL burets to the clamp on the ring stand and label them NaOH and HCl. Then place an Erlenmeyer flask under the buret labeled NaOH.
2. Next, place the appropriate amount of each solution, HCl and NaOH, into the 100 ml beakers.
3. Now, pour 5mL of NaOH solution from the beaker into the NaOH buret. Rinse the walls of the buret thoroughly with this solution. Allow the solution to drain through the stopcock into another beaker and discard it. Rinse the buret two more times in this manner, using a new 5mL portion of NaOH solution each time. Discard all rinse solutions.
4. Fill the buret with NaOH solution above the zero mark. Withdraw enough solution to remove any air from the buret tip, and bring the liquid level down within the graduated region of the buret.
5. Repeat steps 3 and 4 with the HCl buret, using HCl solution to rinse and fill it.
6. For trial 1 record the initial reading of each buret, estimating to the nearest 0.01mL in the Data...
