The History of Basketball
There is a lot to the history of basketball, which has become one of the most popular sports in the world.   There will be several interesting things about the game’s history as well as how much has changed from the invention of the sport up until today’s style of it.   It has been in existence for over a century, and there are so many levels and leagues now for both men and women to enjoy this wonderful game as a leisure activity or as a very well paid career.   There is a lot of information to cover, so the best place to begin is how basketball came about in 1891 by James Naismith.
James Naismith was the Canadian physical education instructor who invented basketball in 1891.   James Naismith was born in Almonte, Ontario.   He went to school at McGill University and Presbyterian College in Montreal.   He was the physical education teacher at McGill University from 1887 to 1890, and then at Springfield College in Springfield, Massachusetts, which was the Y.M.C.A. training school at that time, from 1890 to 1895.   The Y.M.C.A. stood for Young Men’s Christian Academy.   James Naismith was under the direction of American physical education specialist Luther Halsey Gulick, and during this time he invented the indoor sport of basketball.   Under orders from Dr. Luther Gulick, James Naismith had 14 days to create an indoor game that would provide an "athletic distraction" for a rowdy class through the brutal New England winter.   The game of basketball was inspired by a children's game James Naismith knew called duck-on-a-rock, in which players throw a small rock at a duck placed on top of a large rock in an attempt to knock the duck off.   The first game of basketball was played with a soccer ball and two peach baskets used as goals.   In 1893, James Naismith replaced the peach baskets with iron hoops and a hammock-style basket.   Ten years after that came the open-ended nets of today.
