When Children Are Left To Make Adult Decisions
In reading both of these stories it’s easy for the reader to understand that they have very different plots, but if you look a little closer you will begin to see the similarities. The Rocking House Winner is about a boy trying to understand his family’s finical situation and discovers from his mother how unlucky his family really is. The boy’s desires gets the best of him when he tries to help his family’s ‘luck’ and quiet the voice that troubles all that reside in the house. The Destructors take place nine years after World War II and tells us about a gang of wild teenage boys. The boys decide to destroy the only house in the area that was not completely ruined after the war. After thoroughly examining both stories the reader can easily see the resemblance and differences between their conflicts, climaxes, characters, and conclusions.
In the Rocking Horse Winner there are two major conflicts. The first major conflict is between the mother and her son. We learn early on that the mother has no love for her children. The son goes to his mom to understand why they don’t have certain things and the mom selfishly explains to him that his father has no luck. She also makes the boy believe that money and luck are similar which drives him crazy. He is so proud to tell his mom that he is lucky, but she doesn’t believe him. Her disbelief causes her own son’s death, because he tries to prove to her that he truly does have luck. He learns that by riding his horse the name of the winning horse will be reviled to him. He then bets his money on the winning horse. With the money that he receives he puts it in his mother’s bank account, because he knows how much his mother loves material things. The boy thought by giving his mother money she could see how lucky he was and she would love him.
Another conflict in this story is between the boy and voice in the house. The voice’s faint whispers, “There must be more money! There must be more money!” The boy believes that if...
