When gold was discovered in the California people came from all over the world in hope of getting rich quick. For many it was a chance for a better life and a brighter future for their children. Among the many foreigners that would come to America, the Chinese also came to California for fortune and glory. For them it was an escape from their own country, which was consumed by war and starvation. Here they would stay and make San Francisco there home and the largest Asian populated cities in the United States.
Even though China insisted on keeping itself isolated from the rest of the world, certain incident cause for many Chinese to leave their homeland. In 1839-42 and 1856-42 China was engaged in an opium war with Great Britain.. Britain wanted to end China's restrictions on foreign trade mainly they wanted to trade opium.
