Running Head: MANAGEMENT FUNCTIONS AND OPERATIONAL THEORY
This paper will describe how the different functions of management impact the operations management of an organization. A description of the four functions of management will be given along with the operations management theory. The author will explain how the four management functions impact the operations management theory.
The four functions of management are planning, organizing, leading, and controlling. These 4 skills or functions are needed for the success of the business, without them you will lose valuable assets and put your business to ruin. The author will expound on each function.
Planning
Planning is a very important management skill. Management needs to know the path of the business, the goals, and the mission. A prudent operational manager will know how much is in the budget and what the potential costs are for a specified period; short term plan. The manager needs to know how much cash is needed or cash inflows to predict the cash necessities in the near future. If a well thought plan is not in place the goals will probably not be met. The plan can be likened to a navigational course for an airplane. Without the course, or plan, the plane may be flying around without a destination. Simply put, planning is identifying where you want to go, why you want to go there, how you will get there, what you need in order to get there and how you will know if you are there or not( McNamara, 2008).
Organizing
The organizing function typically follows planning and reflects how the organization tries to accomplish its goals and objectives. Organizing involves the assignment of tasks, the grouping of tasks into departments and the allocation of resources to departments.
