Lack of a clear structure
One of my problems was the lack of a clear structure. My group had made the mistake of showing 2 slides before introducing the topic on the third slides. This led to the lack of clarity, and confusion among the audience.
Did not support my points with evidence
The second slide’s article was supporting evidence that training should be seen as an asset. However, this slide was not appropriate. The slide was strong in visual effects, but did not list down the various reasons why training should be seen as an asset, and not a cost. According to Mar (2003, p. 50), speakers cannot be overly dependent on visuals. I also made the mistake of discarding my prepared speech, when I was not the type who is able to speak off-hand. I therefore kept repeating that training is an asset, and did not support my points with evidence.
Lack of Preparation
I did not make sufficient preparation for my presentation. The slides had been discussed long before the presentation date but were only finalized on the day before the presentation. This led to insufficient time for me to practice my presentation. I only rehearsed once in front of my team members, and a few times on my bed before I slept. This in turn did not help much in building up my confidence level for the presentation. Most importantly, I should not have discarded the speech which I had prepared.
Stammering Speech
According to Peel (1998, p.71), there are 7 factors for a successful presentation: “the start; Mood; The voice; The body; Aids; Timing; and The conclusion”.
First, I did not have a good start because I did not begin by introducing the topic. The audience therefore did not understand what I was trying to say. Second, my nervousness, stammering and lack of self-confidence affected the mood of the presentation. As Peel (1998, p.73) said, “our manner should reinforce our matter with apparent confidence and control.” Third, I feel my voice did not display...
